Social pleasantries and polite dealings was where the vampire was most comfortable when it came to interacting with strangers. Kaya fell instantly into the niceties of engaging with Erakin’s friend and learnings the basics of what the men did in their lives. Of the pack that worked together at a metal factory, and their alpha that employed them all and helped them get their life together. Of the little jabs towards Erakin’s tendency to be quiet and reserved and grumpy, but protective and loyal. Of the nights the men would spend together catching up on movies and just enjoying their friendship. Kaya found herself in a sense of complacency, as though she were simply reacquainting with old friends and learning how they grew over the years. The false sense of safety encouraged the woman to lean further back into her friend. A shoulder pressed into his arm, then a hand upon his leg. Eventually her cheek nuzzled against his shoulder, red eyes watching Scot chew on his food in-between the discussion, smiling sweetly towards him in her forever thanks for making this moment even possible. Kaya saw nor sensed none of the apprehension the friend felt towards her intimate nature towards Erakin. He was polite, charming, and more than willing to discuss the life of the man she thought was gone from her world.
And then the friend started to excuse himself now that he had finished his meal. There was a faint trace of regret as Kaya was enjoying the stories immensely, but at the same time, it also meant she was able to steal a little more time this night being with just Erakin, and it was enough to satisfy her to say goodbye.
“No promises, Scott. But I will certainly try. Please visit me again the next time you’re in the club.” The vampire involuntarily leaned away from Erakin as she spoke, putting her polite attention towards the other werewolf as he stood and made his way through the tables of the club’s restaurant toward the exit. Eyes darted towards the remaining man as she heard a sigh, and an eyebrow rose at the pursed lips. She waited patiently as he took a drink, and offered a confused frown towards his expression towards her. He seemed slightly… distressed after that conversation, and she couldn’t place why. From her standpoint, that was the best outcome that could have happened after she had stolen Erakin away and left Scott to be on his own for the evening.
The explanation brought forth a new emotion for the evening. Kaya could stop the sudden rise of violet that flushed her cheeks, and she involuntarily glanced away to compose her embarrassment, smiling faintly as she looked at the empty bottle of scotch. The last time they had been together, Kaya struggled immensely with her appearance. She had been ashamed then of the ragged flesh she adorned, and hardly would have called herself pretty. She had definitely become more confident in herself, but back then, it was a rarity to have Erakin make such a blatant flattering remark. And despite spending the evening learning of his new life, she still found the comment unusual, and thus, making the woman slightly flustered.
“He likes you. He seems quite proud to have you as a friend.” He had friends. And people who cared about him. And here she came, disrupting the system that he went and built for himself. The thought sobered the vampire out of the pleasant experience she had lapsed into, and her eyes closed with a small breath. There was a faint trace of fear that she was going to somehow ruin it, and the thought brought forth an ache. It was the first in a long time she hadn’t felt truly alone since she had moved here. This was someone who knew her, but despite the wonderful feeling having an old companion brought, was she really so selfish that she would risk damaging the relationships he already had?
“You have… a really good life, Erakin.” Kaya opened her eyes again, the tension straining her good spirits as she stared tiredly towards him. “A home, job, friends who care about you… You went and created something. I’m… happy that you’re doing so well.” But. She lingered at the ‘but’ that nearly sprung from her lips, and her eyebrows furrowed together before looking down.
“I don’t want to interfere with any of it. I don’t want my presence to change the life you went and created for yourself.” How greedy she had been, clinging to him as though she had the right to gather his affections without letting him consent towards what it was he was seeking from her. She had been pretending that he wanted the comforts she had been seeking, but now there was a sense of shame that she had acted out rashly, again. Kaya went to open her mouth again, to assure him that she wanted nothing except what he wanted, but it wasn’t true. What she wanted was the comfort that he once tried to offer her, but she couldn’t force that need on him. Not after the way she had treated him. The guilt took over suddenly, and her eyes closed in her attempt to hide the rise of remorse. An old fool was what she was.
“Tell me what you want out of - “
“Kaya?”
The vampire flashed her head up towards the restaurant, away from the man she had been focusing her energy and sad gaze on, with a sharp stare towards her manager. Zach sunk back slightly at the look. He had interrupted something important apparently, but she didn’t draw the curtains back? He pressed on regardless. May as well get it over with and face whatever trouble he managed to drag himself into with… whatever it was that was happening in here.
“Look, you have a phone call. Morrigan. Apparently her and Sai-”
“Are you kidding me.”
Zach sank further back in towards the restaurant. Kaya’s bright bloodied eyes focused on him in her irritation, but closed them to calm herself, sighed, and looked back towards her old companion.
“Erakin. I’m sorry, but I need to take this or risk the wrath of facing that woman personally. It… may take a while.” There was a definite hesitation to the statement. She didn’t want this to be how things ended for her tonight with him, but she also didn’t want Morrigan to come here in person and potentially antagonize the man when she had been doing everything in her power to product the opposite of a problem for him. Her brows furrowed with a frown for a split second before looking back towards Zach and asking for a card. The young wolf was only too eager to get away from the increasingly tense room and fled.
“Tomorrow. I’ll call you tomorrow, and we can… talk?” Kaya asked with a weak smile. Unable to help herself she reached a hand forward to place gently against the side of his face. She wasn’t used to sudden heat on his still living body and her cold fingers flinched in reaction, the desire to go in further making her pause in her goodbye. But she couldn’t make it last, not when that blasted woman was waiting to scream at her for her denying Sai entrance into the club. The thought brought reality back and Kaya finally leaned away from his warmth and aching eyes.
“Zach will be back soon with my card so you can have my number. Text or call me when you can. Good night, Erakin. I’m… happy you walked in through those doors.” And with that, the vampire left without turning back. If she did, she knew she wouldn’t have been able to leave, despite the ache that was spreading through her body.

The phone call with Morrigan was loud but Kaya stuck with her morals until the werewolf conceded, probably more out of irritation than actually acceptance. It had been nearing an hour though and by the time she had gone back towards the club, Zach informed her that the wolf was gone. The vampire casted her eyes down. She knew it was likely he would, but still couldn’t stop that darkness spreading inside her, knowing she was missing out on something important. Damn that Morrigan. Shaking her head, she headed back towards her office to finish paperwork and to stay away from socializing. She just wanted the next day to come.
Erakin’s phone had rung not ten minutes after Kaya had left, a pack member telling him to come to an impromptu meeting down at the metal factory. Everything would be explained then. The tone was light, as though with a promise of the promotion everyone had been teasing him about for ages. It would not, in fact, be the promotional promise, as the man put his phone away and waited at the back of the club for his victim. It took another few hours before it happened. The vampire bitch that owned the place and stole the pack member’s senses emerged from the back door, pulling a coat over her bare arms. The wolf scoffed. Like she needed a coat. He stepped out from the car and called out her name.
Nick tapped his knuckles down on his armchair, green eyes half hidden in contemplation and boredom. The phone call he had gotten from Scott was not one he had expected, ever, in his life. Erakin had always been a tough loner. He picked him up because he had nothing and no one, and was easy to take under his wing. He fit in with this rugged pack because he expected nothing out of this world except a place to sleep and some food in his belly. He had never shown interest in companionship. He was hard to get along with. But he was tough, and worked until the end, which worked perfectly in a place like his steel factory. He did his work, went home, and came back to do it again.
But when Nick found out who it was that won over Erakin, that changed everything. The vampire had made it a habit to share her bed with wolves, but this pack knew better than to sleep with the likes of her. Unless of course, it was with someone who never needed reminding to not fuck a corpse. Until tonight anyway. And so he waited.
The outline of the large grumpy old man finally came, and the irishman perked. He smirked and stood, running a hand over his bald shiney head and stretched his thick well toned arms. He matched Erakin in size, though with more chub due to natural age progression, and maybe more experience. You didn’t get to be an alpha without some fights in your life.
“Hey, old man! Thanks for coming in so late.” For the most part, the pack of rugged men were already there, standing around and looking between Erakin and their alpha.
“Something came up you see, and we decided to just go ahead and nip it in the bud.” At that the alpha lost his smile, green eyes focusing solely on the blues of his packmate.
“Are you seriously, seriously, fucking a vampire girl? Because I gotta tell yah, mate, that shit ain’t gonna fly.”
The car parked out in the empty lot emitted a muffled shout, and Scott shifted restlessly at the scene that was about to go down.
And then the friend started to excuse himself now that he had finished his meal. There was a faint trace of regret as Kaya was enjoying the stories immensely, but at the same time, it also meant she was able to steal a little more time this night being with just Erakin, and it was enough to satisfy her to say goodbye.
